How One Little Girl is Impacting Homelessness.
Homelessness in the United States is at an all time high; rising rents, loss of jobs, and low wages have put more and more people on the streets. Major metropolitan cities have been the hardest hit, with Los Angeles now having the highest chronically homeless population in the country. Many feel helpless in the face of it and city governments have been slow to find real solutions. However, one young girl from southern california has taken matters into her own hands.
Khloe Thompson is a nine year old elementary school student who decided to help the homeless people she saw on her daily walks to school. She decided to start her own charity initiative called Khloe Kares, in which she hand-makes colorful bags with the help of her great grandmother. She then fills the bags with necessities like toothpaste, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, soap, deodorant, and shampoo. Khloe believes that it’s important for people to have the handmade bags because they are sturdier than plastic. She also hopes they will keep them forever.
Khloes’ mother was initially nervous about her handing out the bags, but she says people instantly open up when Khloe approaches them.
Thankfully Khloe has something about her where people warm up to her quickly.
Khloe is making a difference one person at a time and she should be an example to all of us.
When you ask Khloe what she's learned about homeless people in her venture,
Don't be afraid of them. They’re just a normal person like you.”
